MOT MATERIALS

Fabrics

At MOT, our aim is for our fabrics to be biodegradable to ensure that each garment’s end of life circulates back to earth and does not create waste. This includes our carefully selected deadstock materials that are made using natural fibres such as pure silk, wool, and cashmere obtained from reliable sources

Half of MOT styles are made using high-end surplus materials from the LVMH’s fashion houses. The other half are made using certified sustainable and natural fibres.

This aim extends to the trims, threads, dyes, and interlinings used where possible. Non-sustainable virgin materials will only be used as an alternative when no other option is made available in the market and will be pointed out in the product page to facilitate the recycling and composting process. All of the styles’ materials can be found on their product page and can be easily accessible through their dedicated QR code found on every care label.

Embroidery, Interlinings & Buttons

Embroidery

Sustainable quality threads made from 100% recycled PET bottles and are Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified.

Buttons

All MOT buttons are made from 100% Corozo (vegetable ivory) derived from the nut of the Tagua Palm and are biodegradable.

Interlinings

MOT’s main interlinings, including some of its threads are made from recycled polyester (post-consumer plastic bottles) and are Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified.

We utiliseseveral types of glue dots on our interlinings, one of which is called 'double dot' and is formed of 2 layers –base layer and top layer. The base layer of the double dot in this case contains a percentage of recycled plastic resin used in laminated glass.

The Interlining supplier’s factories are members of the HiggIndex programme, which is developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC).

Labels & Swing Tags

Labels

Every brand, size and care label is made using certified GOTS cotton.

Swing Tags

MOT swing tags are made from Recycled FSC® paper, while the string is made using GOTS cotton. You could reuse the MOT swing tag as a note card for gifts.

Packaging

Shipping Box

Natural kraft box made from recycled FSC® materials (75% Recycled FSC® and 25% FSC® certified virgin board). MOT box material is sourced from France and produced in the UK.

Our boxes are sealed with a water-based glue in order not to pollute waste streams down the line.MOT boxes are 100% recyclable and compostable.

Paper Mailer

Natural kraft paper made from recycled FSC® materials (75% Recycled FSC® and 25% FSC® certified virgin board).

Wrapping Paper

Recycled FSC® certified paper. You could recycle the MOT wrapping paper to be reused for drawer linings or as a gift wrapping paper.

Stickers

Stickers are made from 95% sugarcane fibres and 5% hemp and linen – sourced from a by-product from the transformation of sugar cane (bagasse).

The sticker materials, including ink and adhesive are recyclable and biodegradable and comply with DIN/EN 13432 biodegradability and compostability regulations in the EU.

Packaging Tape

Silicone-free kraft paper tape, with a natural rubber adhesive made mostly from renewable resources.

The MOT packaging tape is recyclable along with the MOT box and is suitable for industrial composting. Due to its natural features, the MOT packaging tape is easily tearable by hand.

Gift Note Cards

Card is 100% recycled made from post-consumer paper waste.

Uncoated with natural white fleck throughout – keeping a raw element to it – which is fully recyclable and biodegradable.

The card is Recycled FSC® certified and is made to ISO 14001 standards for environmental consideration.

Printing Methods & Inks

Flexography printing technique that uses up to 30% less ink than alternative methods using water-based non-toxic inks that are organic pigments that are partly made from vegetables.

All inks comply with standard de-inking and recycling practices, so they can be reintroduced to the recycling loop once they have been printed.

MOT PROCESS

3D Design

The collection was created using hyper-realistic 3D drawings and accurate pattern digitising systems, and adjustments to the styles were made on 3D renders –eliminating the need for physical prototypes.

This greatly reduced our carbon footprint, saving energy, water and material waste in both patterns and fabrics usage.

Material Estimates

MOT actively works on optimising material usage during both the order & production stages by relying on ‘AI Material UtilisationEstimate Software’.

This means that almost all the material ordered for production was used – creating minimal fabric off-cuts and waste.

3D Knit Production

We used innovative Japanese machines that knit products as one entire piece, in 3D, without seams. This allowed us to use the exact material allowance to produce styles without manufacturing waste.

Three dimensionally knitted garments ensure that the product is made using a singular material as no trims or threads are included –this makes it a great option for composting at the end of the product’s life.

Digital Printing

Digital printing has the lowest carbon footprint of any of the printing processes.

It reduces water waste, uses non-toxic inks, and consumes 40% less energy compared to traditional printing.

Dyes

Water based, MOT uses inks that carry the Bluesign® and ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® certificates offering assurance that they meet the strict human-ecological standards.

The printed fabrics do not require any chemical finishing, which further contributes to our low impact on the environment.
